Time for Some Turkeys!

Writer's picture: BBCHBBCH

This week, BBCH had the pleasure of welcoming Petpals Therapy for another wonderful visit. This time, they brought along two very special guests: Cran and Berry, two majestic Bronze turkeys! These feathered friends strutted into our care home and delighted Residents with their charming personalities and fascinating features.

But Cran and Berry weren’t the only stars of the show—some adorable guinea pigs also joined the visit! These little bundles of fluff brought plenty of cuddles and laughter as they snuggled up with Residents. Guinea pigs are known for their gentle nature, and their soft fur and curious squeaks made them an instant hit.

Cran & Berry The Turkeys

Bronze turkeys, Cran and Berry (right), are a traditional breed, known for their shimmering feathers that reflect an iridescent bronze-like sheen. Originally bred in the 18th century, they are a heritage breed prized for their natural beauty and calm temperaments.

During their visit, Residents had the opportunity to learn some fascinating facts about turkeys, including what the unique features on their faces mean. Did you know:

  • Wattle: The wattle is the red, fleshy bit that hangs under a turkey’s chin. It helps with temperature regulation, keeping the bird cool in warm weather.

  • Snood: This is the fleshy growth that hangs over a turkey’s beak. It plays a role in attracting mates—the longer the snood, the more appealing it is to female turkeys!

  • Caruncles: These are the bumpy, wart-like features on the turkey’s head and neck. They can change colour, becoming bright red or even blue depending on the turkey’s mood or excitement levels.

Cran and Berry were wonderfully well-behaved and even seemed to enjoy the attention, happily showing off their plumage and letting Residents get an up-close look at their features. Meanwhile, the guinea pigs charmed everyone with their endearing squeals and their love of being gently stroked.

At BBCH, we are always thrilled to have animals visit as part of our commitment to providing enriching and meaningful experiences. This visit from Petpals Therapy not only gave Residents a chance to interact with animals but also sparked conversations, laughter, and new knowledge.

We look forward to more visits from Petpals Therapy and their fascinating animal companions in the future!
