The Power of Furry (and Scaly!) Friends: Therapy Animals at BBCH

Updated: Oct 30

Last week, we had a delightful visit from Petpals Therapy, and to say it brightened everyone’s day would be an understatement!

Petpals brought along their adorable kittens and fluffy rabbits, and the smiles were instant. There’s something truly magical about the way animals connect with people—no words needed, just a bit of fur and a friendly nuzzle.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! We’re also lucky enough to have regular visits from Brigette, our therapy dog, who has become a firm favourite at BBCH. Brigette’s gentle nature and wagging tail never fail to bring comfort and happiness to everyone she meets. There’s nothing quite like a cuddle from her to lift spirits and put a smile on faces.

And for those residents who enjoy a bit of adventure, Zoo Lab pays us visits with their fascinating collection of creatures, ranging from giant African snails to tarantulas and corn snakes! Not only do our residents get the chance to interact with these unique animals, but Zoo Lab also gives engaging talks about each creature. It’s always a highlight to learn about these animals—where they come from, how they live, and the important role they play in nature. Whether it’s holding a snake or simply observing, it’s an experience that combines education with fun.

The benefits of therapy animals go beyond just the “aww” factor. Studies have shown that spending time with animals can lower stress, reduce feelings of loneliness, and even improve mental and physical well-being. And we’ve seen this first-hand. It’s amazing how time spent with these wonderful creatures can uplift spirits, create a sense of calm, and even spark conversations among residents.
