We’re thrilled to announce that BBCH has welcomed some very special new Residents—our very own bee hives! Thanks to the incredible support of Chris Upton form the Eastbourne Beekeepers Association, we now have two hives nestled within our grounds, ready for our tiny pollinators to get to work.
Stuart Corner from the Eastbourne Beekeepers Association gave a fascinating talk to our Residents about the world of bees and what we can expect from our new buzzing neighbours. His talk, The Curious & Secret Life of the Honey Bee, was delivered with such enthusiasm and knowledge, and we can’t wait to see our bee colonies thrive.

Why Bees Matter
Bees are vital to our ecosystem. They play a crucial role in pollination, helping flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables grow. Without them, our food supply would be at risk. In fact, it’s estimated that one-third of the food we eat depends on pollinators like bees!

Our new hives will not only support local biodiversity but may also provide us with delicious, natural honey in the future. Honeybees are fascinating creatures—each hive has a queen, thousands of worker bees, and male drones, all working together in perfect harmony. A single bee can visit up to 5,000 flowers in one day, and a colony can produce around 25-50 pounds of honey per year!

How We’ll Care for Our Bees
Beekeeping requires knowledge, patience, and care. With the guidance of the Eastbourne Beekeepers Association, we’ll ensure that our bees have a healthy environment, plenty of nearby flowers for foraging, and protection from pests and diseases. Over time, we hope to share updates on how our hives are progressing.
Our Bee Hives

A huge thank you to the Eastbourne Beekeepers Association for sharing their expertise and passion. Their support has been invaluable in helping us start this exciting journey into beekeeping.
Stay tuned for more bee-related updates as one of our Residents, a former beekeeper, suits up to check on the honey progress with Chris!🏡🌼🐝
